During Keti Koti, we commemorate the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands and Suriname on June 30, followed by a liberation celebration on July 1 with the Keti Koti Festival. Slavery was officially abolished on July 1, 1863, by the Emancipation Act. Keti Koti means “broken chains.” In Rotterdam, there is a slavery monument on the Lloydkade, the departure point for slave ships.
The festival starts at 12:00 noon in the Oude Westen neighborhood park, followed by the Black Vibes festival at 1:00 p.m. on Schouwburgplein. More information is available on the website.
