Delfshaven

Historic Delfshaven is a beautiful historic district in the west of Rotterdam. Since 1972, the historic part of Delfshaven has been designated a ‘protected cityscape’. In 1389, a canal known as the Delfshavense Schie was dug from Delft to the Maas. This allowed ships to find their way to the Nieuwe Maas.

Delfshaven is best known to the Dutch as the birthplace of Piet Heijn, and to Americans as the departure point of the Pilgrim Fathers. The Pelgrimvaderskerk (Pilgrim Fathers’ Church) from 1761 is a reminder of that time and is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays.
